Curriculum refers to information taught to students. Instruction refers to teaching methods used to convey that information. The Choctaw County Department of Curriculum and Instructions develops a curriculum by looking at both the ways a student's learning evolves and the ways learning can be measured (e.g., assessments) as a means of promoting growth throughout the district.
What is the difference between teaching and instruction in curriculum?
A person can “teach” a subject such as math, English, classical literature, etc. or teach skills such as driving, riding a bike, cooking, etc. To “instruct” is typically concerned with providing specific, clear, step-by-step directions or guidance to someone to enable them to carry out a particular task or activity. The Department of Curriculum and Instruction focuses on assisting teachers and students with developing strategies that promote lifelong learning and achievement. By connecting teaching and instructing in ways that are engaging and thought provoking, students are able to complete rigorous tasks with real-world tools for success that encompasses a framework of the Four C's—communication, collaboration, critical thinking and creative thinking—to develop successful members of the global community.
